US-Japan Friendship Clean-Up Event!

Clean Up New York City & your soul in Japanese Way

"Cleanse Japan"
A Japanese Organisation Whose Aim is to Cleanse Both Environment and People's Spirit.

"Cleanse Japan" (originally "Learn from Cleaning") was established in November 1993, with the aim of learning from the cleaning philosophy of Hidezaburo Kagiyama, the founder of the Corporation Yellow Hat. There were only 35 participants when "Learn from Cleaning" was held in Nihon Taisho Mura, Gifu Prefecture. Since then the "Learn from Cleaning" Movement has spread to various areas of Japan, and by September 2001 its activities had taken place in all the forty-seven prefectures. Meetings have been held overseas as well (in Brazil and China) and regular activities have been carried out since.

As of January 2000, we have eighty-nine registered branches of the club "Cleanse Japan" (eighty-seven in Japan, and two abroad). Participants consist of a variety of age groups and occupations, irrespective of gender. The organisation has constantly expanded, and the aggregate of participants has already reached a hundred thousand. We are convinced that "Cleanse Japan", with the understanding of innumerable people, will further evolve into a national movement.

Aims
"Cleanse Japan" is
1. not merely a club to promote cleaning, but aims at polishing people's spirit through cleaning.
2. is not simply a voluntary service whose objective is just cleaning.
The club has an explicit philosophical goal to cleanse the dirt of mind and of society.
3. is a non-profitable organisation. Its purpose is neither to make profits nor to pull in votes for particular candidates in elections.
4. is a non-religious organisation. It is not concerned about one's religious belief, and does not belong to any religious organisations either.

Activities
Venues: We normally have meetings at public institutions (ex. schools) to clean toilets.
Qualification: You do not need any qualification to join us. Anyone is welcome.
Fee: Expenses for meetings are funded by participants if needs be. There is no fixed fee.
Secretariat: The headquarters is located in Tokyo, and gLearning from Cleaningh has regional secretariats in various places.

Beautify Japan has developed a philosophy based on five principles that encourages sensitivity and generosity through cleaning toilets. The principles include:
Be humble

No matter how intelligent, an arrogant man cannot make people happy. Before all else, a person should be humble. The surest and best way for a person to become humble is to clean toilets.

Be attentive

The difference between those who achieve good results and those who do not is based on whether one is efficient or inefficient. In order for a person to eliminate inefficiency, it is important for that person to pay attention. By becoming attentive inefficiency is eliminated. The way to draw out attentiveness is to clean toilets.

Nurture an
impressionable nature

To live is to make an impression. We want to impress people if we can. So it is first important for one to become a person who can easily be impressed. People are impressed when they see others get down on their hands and knees and put all their effort into accomplishing something. The best way to accomplish this is to clean toilets which people generally dislike doing.

Be grateful

People are not grateful because they are happy.   People can become happy because they are grateful. In that way, when one is cleaning toilets, one becomes grateful for even small things.

Polish your heart Because we cannot take out our heart and polish it, we must polish things that we can see before us. Especially by cleaning the lowly toilet, we make our heart beautiful. People's hearts come to look like what they see every day.
