@Noriko Hino receives Distinguished Honorees from New York City
In May 2007, Ms. Noriko Hino, Executive Director of NY de Volunteer, (NYdV), was recognized as a Distinguished Honoree at the Asian Pacific Island Heritage event hosted by New York City.
Hino was the youngest honoree at the ceremony attended by over 400 guests, including government officials. Other Japanese guests complimented and expressed their pride in Hino and wished her continued success in the future.
The award recognized NYdVfs hardworking social action programs, which would have not been possible without the help of 3,500 sponsors, volunteers and supporters.
@ Activity Guidelines and Expansion
NY de Volunteerfs new guideline:
gUS-Japan Mutual Understanding and Promotion of Social Action Activitiesh.
- shifted from Volunteer Experience Planh
We would like to inform you of our new activity guidelines and expansion. From now on, our organization is shifting from the administration of a gVolunteer Experience Planh to taking a step toward developing and managing gUS-Japan Mutual Understanding and Promotion of Social Action Activitiesh.
Since our foundation in 2002, NY de Volunteer (NYdV) has operated under the motto gLetfs Start Volunteering!h , serving as a bridge linking gNew York City needing volunteersh and gJapanese looking for volunteer experience.h In addition, NYdV strives to advance public awareness of volunteer activities as much as possible.
Up until now, NYdV has a record of being involved with more than 350 volunteer activities such as homeless aid activities, volunteering at the 9/11 Victims Memorial Ceremony. These achievements have been recognized in the community and NYdV received official commendation from New York City in May of 2007.
With the invaluable dedication and high quality performance of Japanese people, NYdV is highly esteemed by other NPOs in New York. In particular, our work in local communities helps in delivering a sense of gReal Japanh, which is not shown in the media and it also allows each individual to assume a role as ambassador between the US and Japan. We believe that these social action activities are the areas where our unique identity can be best realized and where we can contribute the most.
With the continued economic growth of India and China, the importance of maintaining mutual international understanding between the US and Japan is ever increasing. Our gNYdV Explore Japanese Culture: An After School Programh has received attention as an activity that could make children global citizens with broader horizons, and was officially approved this year by New York City, because of the high demand for coexistent multicultural education.
Our organization is planning a unique range of future activities aimed at introducing Japan and Japanese culture. NYdVfs gExplore Japanese Culture: An After School Programh will run on weekly basis from fall 2007 to June 2008, and will involve many participants including Japanese cultural specialists, classroom assistants and volunteers and sponsor corporations. In order to sustain these activities that will benefit future generations, your generous financial contributions are greatly appreciated.
We look forward to your continued support.
@ Bazaar at Kitano Hotel on June 17
We held our annual bazaar on June 17, 2007. This year, thanks to generosity of The Kitano New York, the bazaar was held in a luxurious, terraced room at the hotel. Sumikin Bussan Corporation donated over 500 samples of famous brands such as Theory and J. Crew. Most of the products were limited editions and there was something there to suit everyone. We made them available at 50-70 % off the original price. This yearfs total sales were 1,600 dollars. All profits will be used as funds for NYdVfs future activities. Thank you!
@Marubeni employees participated in our volunteer activates
Marubeni Corporation supports volunteer participation among its employees and on July 20, four Marubeni employees volunteered at our Soup Kitchen to support the homeless.
NYdV coordinates such volunteer activities with and for private organizations. With our established and proven know-how, we are committed to promoting volunteer participation among corporate employees.
Please contact Hino Noriko if your company is interested in this program.

NYdV opened an office in May 2005 for orientation sessions, workshops and meetings and for NYdV staff to plan and prepare its activities. Having this office enables NYdV to provide a wider range of activities and to improve efficiency. However, the rent has been a considerable financial burden. Hence we are looking for companies, which can support us by providing free office space large enough to house three computers.

Hello everyone! I am Mari, a NYdV staff member. I am.
The following reports are from a volunteer activity held on Friday, May 11 to support the homeless.
Report by Mr. Shuzo Kaneko
I decided to participate in this volunteer program because my wife who had participated before recommended it and I also wanted some new experiences. In this program, I helped the staff of an organization that supports the homeless on the East Side of Manhattan by providing food and medical assistance as well as helping them in their job searches.
First, volunteers were separated into two groups, one for providing lunch and another for organizing the library. After working on each task, the staff explained about the organization.
I was so impressed by what they told us. A security guard who used to be homeless said, gIn this facility, there are some homeless who look cheerful, but they feel deeply sad in their hearts.h A maintenance staff said, gPeople tend to be prejudiced against the homeless but once you talk to them in person, they are wonderful people and I believe that it is not good to judge people based on the stereotypes.h
By participating in this program, I could get a better understanding of the circumstances of the homeless, and it changed the way how I see the homeless on the streets. I appreciate the staff in the organization and NYdV who let me have such a valuable experience.
Report by Mrs. Chiaki Kaneko
This was my second experience volunteering in a soup kitchen. This time, I volunteered with my husband. We helped providing lunch and organizing the library at Grand Central Neighborhood Social Service.
First, we had a warm welcome from the staff member, Kenyatta. After watching their promotion video, we were split into two groups. I was in the group providing lunch. We prepared vegetables and served lunch to the homeless. A lot of people looked forward to the meal and they seemed relieved while eating.
After the meal, there was a speech by staff of the organization. They looked very lively with cheerful smiles and they seemed to be proud of what they do, though I heard that they sometimes they experience difficulty in communicating with the homeless. A security guard who used to be homeless told us his own experience. I was moved by his courage to talk about his experience as a homeless person because I am sure it reminded him of the hardest time of his life. I appreciate the organization for giving me a chance to learn about the homeless.
After the program, I exchanged my opinions with my husband and it was a very valuable experience. Before this program, I just told my husband what I did and how I felt during volunteer activities. But this time, I was able to hear how he felt, and that made me think more by myself. This experience led us to talk about the values in our own lives with each other.
On the weekends, I usually go out with my husband to the movies or a museum, but itfs sometimes nice to participate in important social activities like this. I would love to participate in this volunteer activity again with my husband.

7/21(Sat) Garden in Transit |
Report by Ms. Mariko Kuzumi
It was a quiet Sunday morning. Garden In Transit in Midtown was packed with lots of staffs who were running around with paints and volunteers who also had to get up very early. Initially, I thought that we just needed to assist kids, but actually we ended up painting together. There were a lot of paper flowers all over the floor and we colored in those flowers with pink, green, yellow, blue and other vivid colors. I was absorbed in coloring and everyone seemd to enjoy it a lot too. Each one of us has different character and it was quite interesting to see them those paintings.
The venue was full of small kids with their parents and lots of young volunteer groups. It was a great experience that so many people could work together on one project, which I think is very unusual to see in NYC.
People also enjoyed some entertainment such as dance and Taiko performance and it was reminiscent of my college life. And more importantly, it also reminded me of the good side of NY too.
I had a feeling that I just participated in a fun event rather than being involved in volunteer activity this time but I felt great that I had a same task and work together with local teenagers. And I appreciate NYdV giving us such a great opportunity. I would like to continue to focus on these local communities. These colored paintings would be waterproofed and stuck on taxis in New York City. It is quite exciting that these flowers that we created will be blooming in New York this fall and I am really looking forward to seeing the one with my name on it.Feedback from other volunteers
gIt was a lot of fun. I was too busy to take care of my kid and had no free time but it was so relaxing that I just concentrated on coloring. I had a great time.h
gIt was nice to have interaction with the other volunter groups. We also enjoyed music and dance performance and it was just fun from beginning to end.hFeedback from the organizer
gWe appreciate everyone for spending some time on Saturday for gGarden in Transith event today. This is a hands-on project that handicapped people, hospitalized kids and a lot of people from the community are involved in. We hope everyone enjoyed it and please look forward to seeing a cab with a flower that we colored today and remember the day that we had a good time together.h

Hello, everyone! I am Tomoko Tanaka and I have been working at NYdV as a GA (General Affairs) director since last January. Six of us (including myself) come to work in the office once a week in order to oversee our projects and provide opportunities for as many people as possible to experience our great volunteer activities in New York City.
Noriko (Executive Director of NYdV) used to have to do all of this by herself, including planning and coordinating, until January of this year. But now the GA team has been organizing and sharing the work so that we can deliver smoother coordination.
My main responsibility is to build up the well-organized team and develop it to work more efficiently. In order to do so, we started to clean up and rearrange the office. Then, we tried to write down as much of the information that Noriko had in her mind as possible. NYdV is run only by volunteers and unfortunately many of our staff are unable to stay long. The average duration is about three months. Therefore, we are required to be an organization that can keep moving forward with ever-changing staff. Also it is important to create a user-friendly NYdV guidebook so that new volunteers can start working from day one. It took me about four months to ensure that the GA team was reorganized, but there are still some improvements we need to work toward. It has been a great experience for me to feel such accomplishment in the process of creating something new.
