| NY de Volunteer was featured in the AERA magazine
March 3rd issue. |
| The article, titled “Volunteering in New York with Japanese
caring heart,” introduced one of the programs, the after-school
Japanese culture class for American children organized by Japanese
volunteers living in NYC, and how Noriko Hino started the NPO
with the belief that Japanese people can initiate and get involved
in volunteer activities without any experience back in Japan. |

■Getting a broader view point by meeting
wide range of people from homeless to large corporate CEO
Since Ms. Hino established NPO “NY de Volunteer” in New York
in 2002, she has been promoting community volunteering among
Japanese who live in the area.
「Japanese tend to hesitate to get involved in volunteer activities
in the English speaking environment. Preparation seminar for
volunteers and one day only volunteer program is helpful for
people to participate volunteer activities at ease.」
Hino talks to each participant during the activities to make
them feel comfortable so that they will be coming back to another
programAs of now there were 3500 volunteer participants, and
approximately 70,000 New Yorkers received services from NYdV.
Challenges Ms. Hino faced in establishing the organization was
the change of staff members because they return to Japan after
a few years.NYdV activities have received Japanese media attention,
and last year Ms. Hino was chosen as “Seikatsu Tatsujin (Master
of Live) 2005” by Cabinet Office Social Policy Bureau. US media
gave attention to Ms Hino as well. TV Station NY1 chose NYdV
as “New Yorker of the week”.
One of the programs of NYdV is to visit a nursing home and put
makeup on the residents. It is always touching when we see them
holding their photo, that is taken after makeup is done, like
a little treasure.
The new program started this year is to introduce Japanese culture
through Origami and Japanese language lesson in local elementary
school and junior high school. The program has been officially
recognized by New York City as an “Afterschool program introducing
Japanese culture”. Ms Hino says that she hopes that children,
who didn’t have any opportunity to experience foreign culture,
enjoy understanding new and different world.
Ms. Hino came to NY to study English language at the age of
25. She decided to stay NY to see what she can do after her
father, remaining parent passed away. After working as a web
designer for 10 years, she began thinking about volunteering.
“Meeting wide range of people from homeless to large corporate
CEO through various activities gave me a broader view point.”
She works full time running NYdV with donation and often works
through weekends. She says, “New York gives me energy to keep
going. I am very happy that I am pursuing my dream here.”
■Tips from Ms. Hino

on Network issued by Tokyo Volunteer center |
| NYdV was featured on “Network” March and April 2008 issue, a
magazine issued by Tokyo Volunteer Center, under the article title
“NY de Volunteer ? promoting international understanding and building
a bridge between Japan and US through volunteerism.” The article
runs 4 pages regarding the meaning of volunteering in NY, current
situation, objectives of the group and TKdV (Tokyo de Volunteer)
activities in Japan. |

event supported by Yankees Derek Jeter |
 |
| Four out of six locations where “Introduction of Japanese culture
? After school program” was held were sponsored by “Turn 2 Foundation”
MLB New York Yankees Derek Jeter’s foundation. NYdV could provide
total 300 local children the opportunity to learn about different
culture with the help of Japanese culture experts and assistant
volunteers. We strongly believed that we helped those children
to feel that they have more choices in the future and get them
interested in different cultures. |

| *Arrangement
of Bunkyo University International Study NY Study Tour |
NYdV arranged a local program on 1st and 2nd of March for 15
Bunkyo University students who were in NY for their study tour.
NYdV has been arranging volunteer activities for corporate training
tours and university students study tours every year. In addition
to do some volunteer work we invited Japanese business professionals
to have a career development workshop for them.
They spent the first day for cultural exchange in Washington Heights.
Japanese students learned Latin dance and Spanish language from
the people in Latin community, and for exchange they showed people
in Washington Heights Origami and calligraphy.
On the second day Career workshop was held. The guests were Mr.
Toshihiko Kida, President of Johnman USA Inc., Ms. Kyoko Gasha,
TV News reporter, Mr. Kei Nagashima, Hedge fund analysts, and
Mr. Masayuki Tanaka, Travel agency executive. The participating
students had opportunity to hear their experiences and philosophy
and learned how to explore and expand your possibility through
panel discussion and small group work with those successful NY
business people. I believe that the event was very helpful for
the students to plan their future career.
NYdV makes tour arrangement such as training/study tours and observation
tours. We organize lectures in regard to Japan-US volunteer situation
and NPO management as well. For more information contact Hino
at 212-932-7208 or email noriko@nydevolunteer.org. |

Beautification program “Learn from Cleaning New York City” was
held in Tony Dapolito Recreation Center in West Village on May

following “Soji Tetsugaku” (Cleaning Philosophy) written by Mr.
Shuzaburo Kagiyama, founder of Yellow Hat Corporation and “Beautify
Japan” Group (established on November 1993). They have been active
all over the world to spread Japanese cleaning philosophy. In
addition to Taiwan, China and Brazil where they have been working
vigorously for a while, NY program began in the year 2003
NYdV is supporting this activity by recruiting volunteers and
setting up the events with local organizations. This activity
includes cleaning bathrooms in NY City Recreation Center, and
New Yorkers very much appreciate the work every year. This year
event was sponsored by Mr. Shiogai of Shiogai Group. His $3000
contribution realized the event.

You Are the HERO

Today
we are interviewing Zofia, Director of Development of NYdV, who
helps to get the public funds. We will hear how she began involving
NYdV and what she thinks about volunteering.
